Just to be clear to people since I have gotten a message or two on dividing up the world.

Non Civilized Nations like say the Sultanate of Egypt.  Yes, they are backward, yes, they are economically smaller but they also have armies and they WILL not just go into the night.  You want to colonize them?  No problem its going to take time and LOTS of effort.

Sounds very good.
I guess something similar can be said about the ABC-states in south america?

Will we have an idea of what is 'White Space' and what are 'ABC Nations' before we explore, or will there be an RTS-type 'Fog of War'?

I think we'll just use white and grey on the map. Certainly, if we use the Egypt example, the scope and borders of that nation will be well known, but further afield, we may have grey space, but undefined borders to start.

So, for an 'ABC' type nation, it would be a 'blank nation' kind of thing... we know that it's there, the general size and shape, and a basic sketch about it- but not specifics about military or economy?

For the 'tribal areas' (a.k.a. 'empty space') it'll just be a gray blob with no real information?

So similar to the OTL situation then? Costal areas (and political entities) are always well known, but inland areas in Africa and the like are less well known (no major political entities were totally unknown after all).

That is roughly my vision of things.  It will have a name, some generic details and thats about it.  Details will be fleshed in game through player interaction.

White space is just that, empty land and not worth a great deal odds are.

For white space, yes, its DARK AFRICA or wherever.  Its a giant question mark.

I really like where this is going... seems like it'll make for an interesting setup.

Civilized nations will know if Brazil exists without sending an expedition. Civilization nations will not know if the Tribe of Xana exists without an expedition.

Thing is that traders been doing just that since the 10th century (at the latest), so you would need some very good reasons why a place would not be known.

The oly place were totally new land was discovered was tiny islands around antartica and in the pacific.
