A few holydays on the Atlantic coast from 20 to 24 may.
So no NET connections during this period.

Enjoy yourself. Hopefully things won't implode here while you're gone so you have something fun to do when you come back.

I've been in DC since Tues. with my oldest offspring. Tomorrow we move on to NYC via Baltimore, and I just realized: it's fleet week in NYC. :)

This worked out.

Epic win. Pics I hope?
You smug-faced crowds with kindling eye
Who cheer when solider lads march by
Sneak home and pray that you'll never know
The hell where youth and laughter go.

It is? Sometimes I wonder how people know more about what happening in my city than I know.

Just FYI, I am on a conference in Biarritz (French Atlantic coast) in two weeks, then 2 weeks of vacation (including 2 days or so in Vienna), then another conference in Chicago.

That's June for me.

A world traveler, aren't we?
Need some advices (for Germany in particular)? I'm asking because I just read a magazine containing quite a lot for June.

Walter

French Atlantic coast and Vienna? Not sure if you will manage to get in the neighborhood of Paris (location-wise and time-wise), but the Paris Airshow is June  24-26.

That two weeks would be family visits in Hungary, so I won't have time left to do much else.

The only naval-related stuff is the Heergeschichtliches (Army history) Museum in Vienna.

Ah, thought so.
Too bad though, I wanted to point out the "Kieler Woche" - the largest sailing event in the world - from 18th to 26th of June.

I'm back. Fleet week festivities were a madhouse; it was the first actually warm weekend in NYC. So I never got close to the USS Iwo Jima or any of the other active ships. We did get aboard Intrepid, but it was a mob scene. It was good we were early, as by noon on Saturday the line to get into the Intrepid museum was 4 blocks long.

My wife's sister and her husband live on the 23rd floor overlooking the Hudson on Jersey City so we did see quite a bit of military aircraft activity, mostly Marines, including a couple of tiltrotor fly-pasts, some helicopters, and an F-18 display. My 4 year old was just happy to ride the subway all day.

Earlier in the week we did both Smithsonian Air and Space Museums, the B&O railroad museum, and the canal boat ride in Georgetown. The latter is well worth the hour and paltry admission sum.

Nice.

One question though: What's the size of a "block"?

Guinness

"The numbered streets running east-west are 60 feet (18 m) wide, with about 200 feet (61 m) between each pair of streets." (from here) The line stretched from 46th Street all the way down to around 42nd street.

Guinness my family is going to be headed down to Baltimore and DC later on so we are looking for things to do.  Could you give more info on the canal ride?  I have to kill 2 hours with the kids while my wife is on the clock for her job, the official reason for the trip.
