I was wondering what the current state of the art is for battleships in game right now, and if anyone is still using wing turrets. I am considering a ship with either four triple or quadruple main turrets (two superfiring) and two double wing turrets or two quadruple main turrets with two double wing turrets. The first design would allow for broadsides of 14 or 18 guns, while the second would give 10 gun (or 12, if arranged like early dreadnoughts with one turret firing between the towers in an offset configeration) broadsides but the advantage of a better center of gravity due to having no superfiring guns. Come to think of it, would firimg between the towers be a valid tactic for the 16 and 20 gun ships? I know they had some issues with blast damage on some of the ships that had the ability to do that, was there any ship which was able to do that without damaging the firing ship?

I have a class of three, laid down 1906, that features flank turrets, but they're frankly rather bad even accounting for the technology of the times, and scheduled for replacement after the current war one way or the other. I don't know of any other ships built that way off-hand. Certainly I haven't seen any new construction using the feature.

from what I understand from reading what you are proposing:

I dont think it would be possible to fit that many guns of a >14"/350mm gun onto anything less then a 35kton hull and even then with questionable armor. The most guns that I have yet managed was 16x330mm guns arranged similar to the Lyon-class battleships. This is just me dinking around, but I do have a 12x330mm design that may see the light of day. Also, the CSA has no quad turrets, so it would be 1922 before a ship with any quads could be layed down. At this point in time, I think wing turrets are recognized as obsolete, with the CSA having never adopted them on any of its Dreadnaughts. The early ones have an A-Q-Y arrangement istead of using wing turrets like the historical Royal Navy.

Ahoj!
Habsburgs have wing turrets - en echelon - 12" twins on the 14-gun-wonder and 13,5' twins on the other ships.
All these ships are from the "teens". Starting 1920 the KKK went all-centerline.

Actually the Bavarians laid down a small battlecruiser with en echelon 10" turrets recently. However they shouldn't serve as a good guide, as my designers are a bit behind the times.

We need to get the CSA to build these:

Gotta love Italians...and Russians. :)

Italians and Russians are nice, but I prefer visible pictures instead of large boxes w/ red x in them.  :P

Was that intended to fight multiple ships at the same time, because otherwise it seems that it would have been best to just have four or five turrets. At least one of those wing turret pairs (most likely the aft ones, unless value is placed on shooting while fleeing) should be replaced with a centrally mounted turret since they are blocking each others arc.

Still Big Red X....

I can see it. It's an ugly SOB w/ side-by-side triple turrets fore and midships w/ a superfiring pair of triples aft.

What are the general standards in terms of speed, armor, and armament for the current crop of battleships?

20-23kts. 12-15" belt, 3-4" deck, 13" or larger (up to I think 15.75"/40cm) guns. 4-6" secondary, few 'large' AA (2-4") couple more light AA (0.5-1.5") At least that's my take. Somewhere between 25,000-35,000t depending on nation and job requirements.

So, the Standard Battleships would work out very nicely then, so I don't have to make massive ships like the ones planned for our time line's 1920s?
