Figured I would start coming up with some designs for future ships of the Middle Kingdom. Of course none of them will get layed down until after all this unpleasant war business is wrapped up. The designs only reflect current tech, updates to them will come as time goes on.

First up, a long range commerce raiding cruiser. The idea is the give the Dragon Navy a bit of power projection abilities against enemy merchant traffic. Ripped off erm based on the M-Class cruisers of the German Z plan.

Next is a small coastal battleship or Coastal Defense ship. This is mainly just to get some heavy guns on the water. Not expected to deploy far from home.

Waaaay to much armor on that CL, and not enough speed. 13cm belt, try 8-10cm. Ditch the upper belt, it's kinda pointless on this ship. End belts maybe, but not the upper belt. Torpedo bulkheads (at least in the opinion of most on here) are useless if the ships beam is <24m. Dropping that will shorten the length needed for your main belt and drop LOTS of tonnage. Your deck is probably fine, but I'd make it an even 20mm instead of the 19mm/0.75" since the rest seems to be in metric. ;) CT armor seems fine. What is the 200t misc weight to include? I presume FC (100t) and obviously torpedo weight (2t per torp = 12t total), but what of the other 88t? For a 'raider' cruiser I'd guess having extra provisions could be a good idea, also at least a few boilers that can run on coal (since most prizes will still be coal burning merchants) to extend her operational range. Other than that, nice firepower.

IMO, too slow & under armed

Increase the speed to work in the battleline.

What Jefgte said. 4 guns isn't really sufficient. She's well armoured though.

To Jef: As of now, the MK has nothing larger than a CL. Any battle line they get will be new so speed can be set wherever.

Majestic looks nice. I understand that she's a raider, but 11,000nm@17kts is overkill. 9,000nm @ 15 is fine, and the extra strength should get you to at least 29kts.

Remembrance: If you want a real BB, 12" is too small. If you want a CDS, 23kts is too fast.

With Majestic's range: I think some of that will be below decks cargo. The range that is there was manly to get seakeeping under control without raising free board. Adding speed would not help in that regard. Any suggestions there?

Remembrance: 305mm is the newest gun that I have. There is a 330mm kicking around that could be used instead, but I dont think that would be much of an improvement. They sort of bisect the CDS and BB roles. I think after a hiatus from BB building for the MK that this would be a good starting point for doing it again from a historical prospective.

Depends on if you want a blue water navy or a brown water navy. MK historically has been a brown water navy. If that mindset is to continue I think something along the lines of the RL Swedish Sverige would be a good starting point. In game you can use it as "building up the skills needed to construct larger ships, which MK has no experience designing or building yet". Then you could step up to a small Dreadnought like the current Remembrance design, but with better tech as you'll have time to research/integrate things. Plus, with your army no one's (Other than MAYBE the CRAZY Swiss, and obviously RRC) would invade you so you don't really NEED a navy anyway...but that would be boring. SOooo...unless the Jaded Thrown has ideas world conquest (Which I doubt, as they already "rule" the world anyway, just ask them :)) I don't think a blue water navy is a good idea RIGHT NOW. In a few sim years after your 'designers' and 'builders' have some 'experience' under their belts then I could see a much more aggressive naval build up.

With all the damn TBs/DDs/Torpedo barges MK has, all you really NEED is something the requires a BB to kill it. That makes your enemy have to commit it's heavy units to your littoral space, where all those lovely torpedo craft can wreak havoc on them. My $0.02.

I like that one. Let me play with a few things to tweak it a bit.

Any suggestions on the seakeeping for the Majestic?

Higher cruising speed might help with the seakeeping. It's essentially the same as increasing range (since more fuel gets burned, you need larger bunkers). It might also aid with her mission - if your coastal defence ships can rapidly cruise to any given point, you don't need to spread them as thinly.

1.8 torpedoes needed to sink, on a ship designed to operate within the littoral, against a foe as air-dominant as the RRK, strikes me as a liability.

The Majestic really is designed as a long-ranged raider. I agree that torps are not her friend, but we dont really need to worry about air-dropped torps for quite some time.

On the Remembrance and a CDS: I think at this time that there are plenty of reasons to build a bit bigger BB/CDS hybrid. First is that experience issue. There have been BB's in the past so the MK is not completely in the dark on this. However, jumping in headfirst into a 40kt monster would be stupid. Second the small BB concept did not fair to well against the New Swiss in the 1st Pacific War (IIRC from my reading four sunk for no NS ships in return) This lesson would still be relatively fresh so going that rout again would seem sort of dumb to me. Third there would only be a few of these ships (2-3 maybe) built. This leaves plenty of room for construction of those pesky little DDs, TBs, subs and lots of other fun brown-water ships plus all the older ships. Basically a major headache (and lots of busted up and sunk ships) for anyone trying to engage the BB's in a coastal environment, while still being able to hold there own in a semi-blue water environment.

I guess were you could say the MK Navy might be headed is a "blue-brown" water navy. That is to say that, most of the ships will be designed with a brown-water environment in mind, but be capable of projection capabilities in a limited blue-water scenario. I'm not talking about a full-fledged blue-water navy (not for several years at least, maybe not ever), but there are times when it could be useful to have those capabilities.

Don't forget the MK naval top-dogs are in love with torpedo heavy ships.  Even the rather small old CCBB's have a gazillion (14) underwater tubes.  Maybe that the current war will give a huge change, but I doubt that.
