Ottoman Empire Coast Defense ship competition

The Ottomans wish to replace the oldest ships in their battleline, and possibly some other old junk, with a new class or type of coast defense ship. They are of an open mind about what exactly that means.

The general attributes they are looking for:

1. Economy matters here
2. Enough punch to make the enemy think twice about tangling with them, especially if in a group, or supported by coastal artillery.
3. Adequate protection against enemy torpedo craft.
4. Enough armor protection to give them a chance in a fight.
5. Speed and range aren't all that important.
Bonus: The ability to support small numbers of 200t torpedo boats in pinch.
Bonus: Shallow enough draft to be able to lurk in shallow water, etc.

Other than that, the Ottomans are open to just about any idea. If you wish to participate, please post designs here. As noted in the news post, the Ottomans would like to construct at least the lead ship in this class in a foreign yard, but for the right design could build it at home. Some sort of multinational compact might be possible as well, where one nation's design is built by a third party.

There is an updated list of Ottoman naval artillery in the encyclopedia.

Interesting. Do you mind simming it with the Ottoman's 28cm gun and 15cm secondaries?:

Sleightly adapted, so it's more French, and the tumblerhome is getting very pronounced now.

The internal beam is just shy of the 20.5m Jefgte came up with for Admiral Sheer, and when you figure an addition 3-4m on each side to accomodate the torpedo defenses, you will be down to a 12-14m internal beam, not adequate for triple 275mm guns.
Did they beat the drum slowly,
Did they play the fife lowly,
Did they sound the death march, as they lowered you down,
Did the band play the last post and chorus,
Did the pipes play the flowers of the forest

NUS shipyards are going to laid down the famous 200t CTB.

Some more could be add to complet the Ottomans islands protection...

Maddox, as per my posts on the other thread, tumblehome cannot be simulated with bulges. This one will have an internal belt and a reduced beam armor deck. Which might not be a good idea, you'd have a significant portion of your buoyancy unprotected.
The first purpose of a warship is to remain afloat. Anon.

Guinness

The Ottomans already have a 200t TB design. I haven't published the final version of it yet. The art has been sitting 95% done for months... Maybe sometime this weekend I can crank that out. That ship has 1x75mm, 2x6-pounders, and twin 21" TTs with 28.5 knots (SS speed), 34 knots (trial speed).

Gun: The Ottomans have a 28cm and 30.5cm (true 12") gun available now, and a 21cm in development which would be ready for production at the end of 1920. Any or all of these might be acceptable armaments, but one of the ideas in this exercise is to see what other armament combinations might be valuable. For instance, would a ship armed with 2 38cm be worthwhile? What about a ship with just a bunch of 150mm? That sort of question.

There's been some innovative stuff around here for "niche" roles, I'm sort of hoping this might prove an exciting challenge for someone.

Guinness

Ledeper: that might be a bit on the big side. It's more or less a full fledged BB in all but speed...

Also all: there's no reason for this ship to be coal fired. The OE has converted to full oil firing in recent new designs.

The Rock Doctor

If I weren't good friends with some of the folks most likely to encounter said coastal defence ship, I'd submit that "gunship" with 2x3 12" that I was contemplating a little while back.

An In-House Ottoman design. Yes, that's a quad turret which the Ottomans do not have the tech for. Yes, that sucker is mounted smack in the middle of the ship. I figure that on 120m, it could have something like 150 degree clear arcs on either beam, depending on how the funnel is arranged and superstructure, etc. Maybe even more.
