Good point. When I threw together that quick and dirty estimate above, it seemed to me that a "wing" would work on Yorktown or Essex sized fleet carriers. Anything smaller could carry a number of squadrons I think.

Sachmle

IIRC most CVs operated 1 fight squadron, 1 scout/TBD squadron, and 1 Bomber/Dive Bomber squadron with a few spares of each type.

Thats a full sized CV Sam CVL's and CVE's were something else.  Also not all CV's were equal.  The post washington treaty CV's air groups were smaller than the CV's built in the 30's.  Also different sized CV's like say the USN Midway class CVB's.

Oh, I agree wholeheartedly.

Well, and while not quite helping with CV air groups, this site, lits the US Army Air Corps OOB for WWI. Seems most were 18 plane Groups composed of 4 squadrons. The bombardment group however seems to be made up of 3 squadrons with 10 planes each.

I liked the all different types of planes divisible by 25, a Fighter Squadron might have 25 aircraft and  given the tech might expect less then half of them to be combat ready on a given day.

Over all I think simply setting a maximum number of aircraft each airfield can support will put some limit on the numbers of Aircraft as the Airfields are the units from 1916 onwards that cost BP to build.

little carrier - 25 planes
medium carrier - 50 planes
large carrier - 75 planes
big carrier - 100 planes
huge carrier - 125 planes

I'm kinda partial to having planes divisible by 4, not 25.  That way pairs, finger 4, etc work out. I guess the 25th could be spare or a utility plane however.

As for the #/CV... I don't want to go there :) Typically the numbers diminished as planes got larger anyhow, then grew as planes became more robust and deck parks were an option.

For now Vics of 3 are standard the finger 4 is 20+ years off tactically.

As for the 25 Plane fighter Squadron that would be typical as with 25 aircraft and maybe a 60% readiness rating you getting what 15 planes into the air on a given day and thats with lots of extra work by the ground crews.

We pay for the miscellaneous weight used to sim aircraft capacity in the carriers - let's just assume the airgroup is covered within the ship's cost.

Kaiser Kirk

I'm fine with that, but as clarification- are upgrades of the airgroup year presumed part of maintenance?
