The two are only barely comparable. Different engine year. Different main armament requirements. Mostly a different mission too.

And the Caliphate ship is required to fit in a type 2 dock.

Later just for fun I'll do a half sister which swaps mines for guns.

#48
Same hull. Basically comes out being a slightly early and overweight London Treaty cruiser...

Tanthalas

I like that version (the 8.27" one) Rather alot actualy if Rohan was planing any 8" ships they would end up looking somthing like that (we arnt though 12" or 5.25" for cruiser types)
"He either fears his fate too much,
Or his desserts are small,
Who dares not put it to the touch,
To win or lose it all!"

James Graham, 5th Earl of Montrose
1612 to 1650
Royalist General during the English Civil War

mentat

agree with Tanthalas - prefer the bigger gun version  :) - esp vs Hapsburg 190mm Kreuzers

- but any chance to add 2 more 210mm vs some of those sbmgd TTs (seem a lot) and/or maybe reduce to 31 knots?

miketr

I like the 210mm gunned ship better over all with the following reservations.

1) The total lack of secondaries is a bit of a problem.
2) I do wonder at the scale of protection it is light, its really only going to protect the ship from DD/TB sized weapons.
3) I liked the heavy mine suite of the other design.

Still if you were going to build the 150mm gun version vs the 210mm I would go with the 210.

Michael

Guinness

I'm still fiddling with a 210mm ship with better armor and an acceptable mineload... But here's a different 150mm design: more guns, less mines.

The attraction of this ship is it's versatility. It can carry and train 90 midshipmen in peacetime, and could also be used to transport 150 troops instead of the mines. So for going long distances and then causing trouble, it can do more than one thing.

I think the 150mm design is just too big for only ten 150mm weapons.

Jefgte

...Probably for the heavy Misc weight with 306t of minen & 3 raised mounts on 5.

IMO, too heavy for a minelayer. not realy well balanced.

Well, that ship is supposed to be a lot more than a minelayer. It's a general purpose commerce raider, meant to tie up the enemy looking for it. The mines are just part of the havoc it might wreak.

Here's probably the last in this exploratory series. This ship has 8x210mm guns, arranged in super firing pairs forward, either all before the bridge, or a pair forward and a pair aft of the bridge (ie something like Tone, or something like N3).

Most of the secondaries are arranged aft, as are the mine handling facilities.

This is a little heavier, a little slower, and not much more heavily protected. I think what I've learned in all this is that the cost of carrying mines, at least according to SS2, is pretty high. The cost of cramming a ship like this in a type 2 dock is even higher.

i'd be inclined to split the roles - smaller fast minelayer - something like an early Manxman - and nice spanking Heavy Cruiser - like a Trieste - will add a certain style and panache to the current Caliphate line up  :)

Still trying to figure out just what sort of Navy the Caliphate will have...

This exercise is based on the idea of building a cohesive "battleline" around Yavuz and Süleyman. So the main parameters were 25 knots, a type 2 dock, and the new 305mm gun, while also introducing superfiring.
