Types of Units

From what I can tell right now, the types of army units buildable are Light Infantry, Infantry, Mountain, Marine, Commando,  and Desert. Jungle appears to be a unspoken yet existant type, and Light Armour and Heavy Armour are there as well. I would like to propose a new Specialist type, Urban. It specializes in urban fighting, and consequentaly has more grenades, more machine guns, and less artillery than normal units.

I think you are a bit to early, but the idea is compelling, but still;Urban warfare were more or less a lesson from ww2,(Stalingrad,Berlin) so IMO its a thirty something tech.

Then again, we do have early 30-40 tech available in 1920, or so. In the N-verse, we did have some city battles in the Sino-Swiss war and I think in Calcutta.

I agree with Per, its to soon for URban type Units (trust me not only dont we have enough experiance, we realy dont have the necessary weapons)

The rule of thumb for military units is that fighting in built up urban area's is to be avoided if at all possible.  It eats manpower like no tommorrow and when anti-tank weapons become common its a death trap for armor also.  I have never read of large scale units that area specialized in urban combat, receive trainning for it sure but specialize in it?  Not really unless you count security forces.

Also we, the game time period, is still at the point that fighting in cities would be very rare.  In the fortress around the cities sure but inside the cities would be either rare or fairly brief.  Field armies wouldn't want to get sucked into defending a city and attacking troops would be more likely to demand the city surrender.

The Swiss obiously don't listen to conventional military wisdom. Pretty much all the land fighting in the 1st Pacific War was in and around cities. The fighting in Taiwan and Hainan in the 2nd Pacific War also involved alot of city fighting, and well this latest Swiss war has been all city fighting...

The Swiss should have their war experience in cities erased by a moderator-meteorite. ;)

But I agree with Tan, we really don't have the necessary weapons to conduct urban fighting effectively, although I have had alot of experience in urban fighting. Heck most of the Sino wars occurs on what is now RRC borders.

Although we have experience (Swiss and Me) in Urbane fighting, there isn't a need for a specialist group for this combat yet.

Is like the argument against AA guns. There simply hasn't been a real need for that kind of specialization.

Islands are special cases, small land area's where the cities will draw he fighting especially as supply points.  The Australian invasion would require ports to supply beach heads so more of the same.

Specialist Infantry has fewer and lighter field guns and would normally have more automatic weapons so I would say a Mountain Warfare unit would work fine; perhaps a commando unit.

Ok, just suggesting.

Nothing wrong with that at all.  I like to debate things feel free to continue...

Japan's Special Armed Garrison "Kerberos" would probably classify as an urban specialist unit... but for different reasons. :)

Borys

Ahoj!
Everybody has a number of "urban warfare" specialists. These are engineers - present in all armies.

They would be part of a unit and not a stand alone unit.

What about Armored Car?  Or is that based on Light Armor?

It would be cool to 'build' Division's and Corps from Brigades, ala Hearts of Iron 3.  But, it would also lead to complication of resolving land combat.
<_kr4m3r> so many fucking criminals, its bullshit
<foniks`> heh, if we sent all the criminals to some empty continent and just left them there to die
