ra, egypt cl laid down 1917 (Engine 1916)

   No drive to shaft, 2 shafts, 47,482 shp / 35,421 Kw = 29.00 kts

Got a bit of a problem here...

The Rock Doctor

He's left enough miscellaneous weight for oars and slaves.

Guinness

Two more choices from the Confederates, neither shipping mines, but both shipping two more guns.

Guns are arranged AXY, with none superfiring. I imagine X and Y would be roughly back to back.

Dropping speed to 27ish knots earns considerably more protection.

nice size for a handy smaller CL - unfortunately can't sim anything right now - but noting the variety of responses - I would think max. practical firepower for this size is something like:

  10 x 5.5" 5x2 Mount with hoist with 2 superfiring - A (B)  Q(X)Y - but possibly tight squeeze

or 8 x 6"  3 twins n 2 singles superfiring (think twins superfiring too top heavy)  - so as above - but  AQY as twins and  (B) and (X) as singles

   - any other views on this?

On a hull of 120m or less, I think four main battery mounts is all that would be practical, unless beam mounts are added.  I'm not sure a fifth mount would add much - combat with other cruisers and destroyers will not often  be a line-of-battle affair that allows the (C) or (Q) mount much opportunity to bear.

yeah think you're right - this is Egypt - **ffin 'ot - ditch the 5th turret and go for proper aircon instead ... ;D

actually we don't know if max firepower is a priority or not - 8 x 5.5 + plenty of TT and provision for Mines might suit better

Ciders - can we find out more their mission profile and likely opposition?

- you looking for balanced all-rounder or something more focussed?

I have to admit, with that question it could change the whole idea.

Then there's the quaint and backwards Bavarian designers who dusted off pre-1906 plans who went with the 4 centerline mounts and went for casements to increase the broadside :)

Mission profile ? All the missions.  ;D

In fact, Egypt is a ( very ) little navy. These cruisers will me made the " vertebral column " of the fleet. Escort, sea patrol, secundary mines laying... all the possible missions for a light modern cruiser. At the end, I think the fleet will possess :

- 2 modern battleships
- 6 light cruisers
- 10-12 destroyers and torpedoes rams
- 4-5 submarines
- 6 minesweepers
- some gunboats for the Nile
- some auxiliary ships

And for the opposition :

- at first : the Ottomans, notably in the Red Sea
- at second : a medium naval power in Mediterranean Sea

The only difference, between the balls of July 14th and the French Revolution, it is the size of firecrackers and the direction towards which we launch them.

He said medium, not 'nearly non-existent'. And I think the Italians, and for that matter the Austrians, are a little more than "medium". Perhaps he means Greece. Of course that would draw the wrath of their 'guardians' the Iberians and Austrians.
