Railways often are marked on contemporary maps. Which are not always easy to find. Brasil's early XXth century netwrok was a chore to find. And what's it doing in Washington DC I have no idea :)
If everything else fails, this fine site:
http://mikes.railhistory.railfan.net/home.html
has 1935 RR maps.

I've tried it out on a few different routes, and have found that most major ports have been included (including military ones). You get a figure in nautical miles, and a rough map showing the route that the program used.

This'll be helpful for figuring out how long it takes a fleet to get from one place to another without spending inordinate amounts of time staring at a map.

Found the following nice book called Atlantic Navigator, from 1853, available free at Google Books.
