Three options have emerged for a refit to the Rattlesnake class to be begun in 1918 or 1919. Which would you choose of these (if any)?

Original design: http://www.navalism.org/index.php?topic=744.msg5782#msg5782

The first is a simple refurbishment, swapping Fire control for the secondary 4" battery of the original design:

I'd go with the last option. As I get reminded every time I post one, the minimum functional speed for a cruiser these days seems to be 28-30 knots, and rebuilding these is cheaper than a new ship of the same ability.

It's especially cheaper in terms of BP, which is attractive, as by the time I'd refit these, I hope to have swung the pendulum back toward being short of BP instead of cash.

Right now these ships are used exclusively as close escorts for the battleline. More speed would allow them to take on more roles, which would be very useful. Still $4 per is a lot of money....

I agree with Valles. And even in their battleline escort role, having enough speed to meet the incoming TB/DD/CL BEFORE they get into torpedo range of your battleline is a GOOD THING. Also, they can drive them off at a greater distance, preventing/slowing identification of your forces by enemy scouts.

They are correct to protect BBs from TBs attack.
23.5kts is short & just enough to protect 20-21kts BBs

Use them as ECs is a good choice for the futur.

I'd be opting for the faster model, for reasons already provided.

Glad you guys liked that one. Thinking about what I'd do with them once reconstructed, I arrived at the idea of them serving as flagships for light cruiser squadrons, which leads to this modification, which ships one less 5.5" gun, but adds weight for flagship functions.

The layout of the existing ship has 6" singles in an ABXY with B and X superfiring, with 4" guns on either beam. The new one would have 5.5" twins in AXY with X superfiring, and an additional single amidships somewhere, along with a pair of singles forward on either side of the bridge. So sort of like the arrangement of the first three Chattanoogas, but with twins in stead of singles in A, X, and Y positions.

Still to be decided: whether or not to ship a small number of torpedoes. That would probably wait until the art starts.

One little potential problem I see immediately is packing 3 more 5.5" guns onto a ship with the same length belt as the Chattanoogas, but with extra beam, that should be ok.
