IMHO 75mm guns are just too small for a 1000t DD. Do the Maoris not have a gun between 75mm and 150mm?

Also I know the Maoris are dedicated to turbo-electric propulsion, but it really doesn't have any compelling advantages in a destroyer, as you'd gain very little compartmentalization and probably don't have a requirement for being able to steam backwards at near 100% power. Of course, such a machinery set should also be heavier than direct drive or geared turbines, but SS2 doesn't capture that fact, so I won't dwell on that.

I'm not personally on-board with the escort cruiser concept either (isn't that what old cruisers are for?). But I guess if you've just got to build one, your escort cruiser is as fine as any. No torpedoes at all though?

I'll have a 100mm/50 available starting 1916H2, but before that, when these ships were built, 75mm and 150mm were the only options, and the latter was abandoned for these on the grounds that it wasn't really feasible to carry a useful number of them - IE, two or more - and still have the enclosed mountings that are necessary in Maoria's southern waters.

If I had geared drives, I'd probably use those for the destroyers, yeah. But I don't, and direct drive's efficiency characteristics are regarded as doing unacceptable things to their range.

And no, no torpedoes on cruisers. No room for submerged tubes and one shell in the wrong place on deck to mission-kill the entire ship? No thanks.

*tries the submerged tube thing* ...hm.

Nah, I'll stick with specialists. Torpedo delivery isn't part of their mission brief; shredding destroyers and other light cruisers is. Maori doctrine is that torpedoes have a maximum effective range of one kilometer, no matter how long they'll run for, and the costs for the kind of speed needed for that would add enough to make for a bigger ship than the Maori are willing to risk in that kind of attack.

I agree with Guiness, 75mm gun is short for DD.
Did you test SS with 2 or 3x150mm on 1000t ?

Your escort cruiser is well balanced, she have a strong protection too. Good armament to protect Maoria battleline from DDs TT attack & protected cruisers.

Yep. Won't work with both 1909 engines and ammo hoists, that I've found.

Working on art for the cruiser. Interestingly, she comes out rather roomy feeling on deck, at least to me after so much work on Cross Mirage.

Pity about the lower rangefinders. They have large area's they can't do their job.

IMO, better places for lower rangefinders are on blockhaus near B & X turrets

Hm. Perhaps. But there's the issue of deck space - the beam-and-length four-post takes up more than some other approaches, and most designs won't be as relatively roomy as this one...

...and frankly, I'm too enamored of the way they look.

Anyway. Here's the latest.
