QuoteHmmm. At 22.4 knots there will be very few DDs, PCs or ACs this ship can force into a fight. Weapons are right, speed is definitely not up to that task

These ships are defenders first .
When the enemy cruisers & DDs attack ... their job is to protect the BBs.

Quote...With the weapons change you're bassically downgrading the quality of the battleline by downgrading those ships to the role of AC hunter,...

With that rebuilt, I have 2 ECs abble to repulse & sink 10 000t cruisers.

That's only appliable to refurbishments. A reconstruction gives you a free hand regarding machinery weights. At an added cost, of course.

I like her, except for the part that means you're giving up two of your 340mm gunned ships.

I'd do something like that to one of the 12'' PD classes you have (keeping the 12'' and not swapping them for 275mm guns) and keep antofagasta class as it is.

But at least this reconstruction has the merit of an increased speed and a credible anti-AC gunnery setup. With that speed, armor and weapons combo it's a good ship to do fleet scouting in force or to brush aside any enemy scouting efforts not involving true battlecruisers.

I still think rebuilding some of the older PDs keeping their 12'' weaponry would be a better invest (that way the ship would be a menace even for enemy medium to light BCs. 275mm won't cut it imo), but I like this iteration much more than the previous ones.

One question, though. why putting the eight raised 152mm guns in casemates?. Give them proper single mounts, that will mean better firing arcs...as it is if the ship has to engage an enemy directly ahead (probable scenario in a scout role), it'll be hard pressed to bring more than two secondaries to the correct bearing. Turrets would solve it.

That should be 63 / 1000 = 0.063 BP...

Otherwise looks like a great reconstruction...

The Rock Doctor

If you're going to go down that route, consider increasing the height of the main belt.

For comparison - if you scrapped the two Antofagastas, retaining their machinery (for used in slower fleet train elements) and armament (for a Vanguard), what would be the cost of a battleship with 4x2 340mm and 22.5 kts speed?

Engine year is 1917, should be 1916.
Other than that, it's a damn fine little rebuild. It won't be as capable as a new-build BB, but it will make a much stronger ship that's easily on par with several classes of ships that it might be facing in the next 5-10 years.

Quotewhat would be the cost of a battleship with 4x2 340mm and 22.5 kts speed?

4T2x340-22.5kts ...18000t, BB Atahualpa cost

With this rebuilt, Autofagasta could work with 21kts BBs Atahualpa & BB Waskhar.
If they do this job, they are classed as AC.
The first generation of BCs with 12" guns, 14 000 to 20 000t don't like very much to receive 1200lb shells.
The reconstruction could be made in 1917-1918-1919 , just before the Peruvian new BB.
Autofagastas rebuilt take the BPs & price of the 16 000t AC in the Peruvian program.

QuoteIf you're going to go down that route, consider increasing the height of the main belt.

Increase the height of the belt to 0.5m (2.8 to 3.3m) mean that the displacement increase to 16 600t (+400t)
& the speed drop down to 22.6kts (-0.4kts).
Not cool :(

With 16200t - 320mm x112mx2.8m belt - 23kts - rebuilt, Autofagasta & LaPaz "ll reclassed as ACs.
