The 1884 design of torpedo ram is the oldest currently in service, and is considered too slow and short-ranged for modern warfare. Nonetheless, these ships - the first specialised for torpedo warfare - have been retained in service, operating in secondary theatres. Given their small size, they are also unable to venture into the open ocean, and are so being deployed along the Gulf Coast of Florida. If required, the well-developed rail network could be used to deploy this class overland to the West Coast.

By 1888, the Confederate States Navy had developed a large, 19.5", torpedo; this had only slightly more range than the older 18", but carried a larger warhead to allow for the increasing size of ships. A quick-firing 3pdr gun was mounted for some ability to combat other light ships, introducing a weapon now used on most vessels. There were increases in seaworthiness and speed - to a formidable 25 knots - for these ships, at the expense of structural weakness that has restricted many ships to limited duties.

In 1892, there was a further increase in the speed of the CSN's torpedo rams. The hull weakness of earlier classes was not overcome, however, and there was still less space for the crews in this class. The shortcomings were so severe that, after the mutiny aboard TR-81 in May of 1895, the 1896 class was completely recast to avoid the weakness and cramping endemic on earlier classes.

Despite the 1895 redesign, this class failed to overcome the cramping in the earlier classes. Earlier drafts included only one 3pdr and three torpedo tubes, but the navy refused to accept a hundred-ton increase in displacement for no increase in offensive power; as a consequence, this is the most powerful torpedo boat currently in service in the world. The first sixteen ships of the class were sold to New Switzerland in 1900, with the remining two being sunk in the 1901 war with the Island Commonwealth.

The CSN's answer to the large, well-armed torpedo-carrying vessels being built abroad. Two 3" guns provide a good punch against other light craft, whilst four 19.5" torpedo tubes - losing the traditional bow tube - give the ship a powerful means of attacking larger vessels. These ships have good range and high speed.

This is the latest of the CSN's torpedo rams, carrying a heavy gun and torpedo armament. In essence, the 1898 type has received 4" guns and been fitted with rotating torpedo mounts. Turbine propulsion is not considered mature enough to be fitted on these ships.

6 ships were sold to Egypt in 1914/1915. The rest were refurbished in 1915.

The 1904 type large torpedo rams break new ground for the type in the Confederate States Navy. They are the first to utilise turbine propulsion, and are also the first of the CSN's vessels to utilise all-oil firing, completely forsaking the once-sacred black diamonds of coal. In addition, they are the largest of the type yet built; in fact, many feel that they should be given the "Torpedo-Boat Destroyer" title other navies use for ships of this type, reserving the "Torpedo Ram" designation for smaller, dedicated torpedo-boats. They are also the first vessels of the type in which the endemic cramping of previous classes is finally overcome.

Another evolution in torpedo ram design, the TR-192 is a long-range, high-speed design capable of operating either in the role of torpedo boat destroyer or fleet scout. The most sophisticated design fielded by the Confederate Navy to date, it carries a Marconi to allow it to communicate with the fleet in a scouting role, four 25-pounder guns, four 6-pounder guns, and has a top speed of 30 1/2 knots. It's high speed and heavy armament for it's size mean that it is capable of doing many of the jobs that were once the domain of smaller cruisers.

35 ships: TR-200 to TR-234

The high cost of the TR-192 and her sisters (8 under construction and 16 more planned) has raised some eyebrows at the Confederate Admiralty. Both Secretary Roosevelt and First Sea Lord Anderson feel that the new ship is too large and expensive for the coastal work traditionally done by torpedo rams. In order to offset this, specifications were put forth for a complementary class of torpedo ram- a smaller and less costly ship that could be deployed in large numbers, and built with ease in any shipyard.

The resulting design is- when considered remembering the limitations placed upon it's design- nothing short of astounding. The projected TR-200X class is capable of being constructed in a Level 0 port facility, able to reach almost 28 knots, and carries 4 of the new 20" torpedoes. Of course it has many drawbacks due to the limitations placed on it by its design requirements. Small ships are not very survivable, and the TR-200X is no exception. Virtually every penetrating shell will hit something vital. It's gun armament is light, meaning it is limited to torpedo attack or fleeing when faced with any ship larger than itself- meaning almost anything. Also, the powerful torque of the ship's single 12,000 shp Curtis turbine engine causes a slight list to port when it is at top speed... and thus the ship requires a degree of starboard rudder to maintain a steady course. This is more an annoyance than anything else, but it can be seen as one of the ship's defining characteristics.

The first new fleet Torpedo Ram design in a few years is also the largest Torpedo Ram ever built. The TR-235 class is designed in response to larger, more heavily armed foreign designs that have appeared. This class are also the first Torpedo Rams to carry a short range Marconi set and depth charges as designed. The 4" gun, now firing the new 30 pound shell persists, despite proposals to arm them with the new 4.75" 50 pounder.

Designed specifically for work with the scouting force, the F-Class carries one less main gun than the preceding E-Class, but of larger caliber: 4.75" 50-pounder vs. 4" 30-pounders. They also carry the new 21" torpedo in place of the older 20".

Extra range and much improved freeboard and seakeeping should mean that this ship can drive harder into heavier seas while also being able to cruise further. This is considered a great benefit in the planned role.
