Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich Romanov

Born: 6 November, 1856.

Eldest son to Grand Duke Nicholas Nicolaevich of Russia (1831 - 1891) and Alexandra Petrovna of Oldenburg.

Grand Duke Nicholas is the first cousin once removed of the Empress Xenia.

Grand Duke Nicholas was educated at the school of military engineers and received his commission in 1872. During the Russo-Turkish War, 1877-78, he was on the staff of his father who was commander in chief. He has distinguished himself on two occasions during this war. He worked his way up through all the ranks until he was appointed commander of the Guard Hussar Regiment in 1884.

He has a reputation as a tough commander, yet one respected by his troops. His experience at that point was more as a trainer of soldiers than a leader in battle. Nicholas is a very religious man, praying in the morning and at night as well as before and after meals. Also well known as a panslavist nationalist.

By 1895, he was inspector-general of the cavalry, a post he held for 10 years. His tenure has been judged a success with reforms in training, cavalry schools, cavalry reserves and the remount services. He was not given a combat command during the Russo-Japanese War, because the Czar Vladimir wanted a loyal general in command of St. Petersburg due to the domestic revolutionaries.

During the 'Time of Troubles', he was commander-in-chief of the St. Petersburg Military District. He had the reputation there of appointing men of humble origins to positions of authority. The lessons of the Russo-Japanese War were drilled into his men.

Grand Duke Nicholas played a crucial role during the 'Time of Troubles'. With anarchy spreading and the future of the dynasty at stake, Czar Vladimir had a choice of re-instituting the reforms of Mikhail II and new policies of Sergei Witte or imposing a military dictatorship. The only man with the prestige to keep the allegiance of the army in such a coup was the Grand Duke. Czar Vladimir asked him to assume the role of a military dictator. With a roar Nicholas refused, "You will kill us all and Mother Russia will perish from the Earth!". The Grand Duke drew his pistol and threatened to shoot the Czar on the spot if he did not endorse Witte's plan. "You must Sign! Reinstate the Manifesto!" This act was decisive in forcing Vladimir to agree to the reforms and soon after abdicate the throne and flee to the Ukraine.

The people of St. Petersburg wanted Grand Duke Nikolai, to become the Czar. Establishing the 'Royal Commitee' Nikolai refused, " No man can undo our wrongs to the Nation, Russia will not stand for it". He next stated " A kinder hand is needed if the Monarchy is to stand." After much debate and at the urging of Nikolai, the Committee removed the succession impediments, and declared Xenia to become Tsarina (or Empress as she preferred). Once again Nikolai placed Russia first in his heart.

After Xenias acension to the throne, Nikolai went on to defeat the Socialists at every turn. Removing the last threat to Russia by May, 1906.
