With much of the CSA's cruiser force in need of refits, it is expected that the CSA's drydocks will be busy.

The first ship to be refit is the first class cruiser Davis. This effort is also considered the prototype for similar refits to come.

As part of the refit, the coal fired boilers were converted to oil firing. The outdated 4.85" 55 pounders were removed, and their casemates plated up. The mostly useless 6 pounder guns were likewise removed. In the place of the former secondary armament, 20 new pattern 4.75" 50 pounder guns in deck mounts were installed, as well as the new 1.5" AA gun.

Additionally, new centralized fire control was fitted, and various fittings and equipment were repaired, reconditioned, or replaced as appropriate.

The original Davis design can be found here: http://www.navalism.org/index.php?topic=743.msg4926#msg4926

Faced with refitting a large number of "Frigates" (as known in the CSA), the Navy has elected to convert at least some of them to dedicated flagship/tenders for 10 boat divisions of the new 250t Torpedo Boats.

During conversion, 3/4 of the boilers are removed, reducing top speed, and the rest converted to solely oil firing. The former boiler spaces were used for additional bunkerage and hold space. Most of the 4.85" 55 pounder guns, and all of the 6 pounder guns are removed, their handling rooms being used for additional berthing space. New workshops and berthing was built up on-deck, and space was made for reload torpedo storage. The armored belt was also removed.

Enough fuel is carried to refuel each boat once, and enough torpedoes carried to reload each boat once. The shops are relatively limited, and meant for various light maintenance tasks.

These ships are intended to be used to allow TB divisions to deploy along the CSA coast away from major ports, or for forward deployments elsewhere, though fuel would need to be supplied periodically by oilers.

A Refurbishment of the TR-144 (aka "A" class) Torpedo Rams. Armament is updated to 1915 standards, including new 4" guns firing heavier rounds, new 20" torpedoes, and depth charges. Ship is converted from coal to oil firing. Ship is refurbished. 25 such refurbishments planned (with the other 6 members of the class going to Egypt as part of a more complicated arms deal). The result is a useful second-line Torpedo Ram, which can be useful also for coast defense or first line duties in a pinch.

Refit plans for Virginia, the first of the Confederate pre-dreads which will go under the torch for radical reconstruction. Hull is stretched by 27.5 feet aft of the midships turret to make room for one more turret. Some turret protection is rearranged, and bulges are added. Additionally, completely new machinery is installed which brings the ship up to battleline speed, and fire control and modern C&C facilities are added.

My usual argument about bulging at reconstruction is that SS2 does not account well for the weights, the reinforcement the added bulge provides is over estimated.
It should be reflected in a composite strength of 1.02-1.03. With the radical 'fit a new turret in' this is even more so.
28' extension is not enough to cram a ~28' diameter barbette AND another 30-40' for the guns themselves on the centerline. Unless the turret is superfiring it won't fit.

Main belt should be extended by the same amount as the hull.

This refit also changes the secondary layout from 24x4.85" to 14x5.5".

I've heard that argument before, but it's not in the rules. This doesn't mean I'm not personally opposed to such a revision, but harping about it in other people's designs isn't the right way to propose a revision.

I've got an illustration in the works now. The midships turrets end up back to back, with the existing midships turret turned around to face forward. I believe this works as the boiler spaces, which were already split fore and aft by the midships barbette, etc, can be smaller with the entirely new machinery. So a little bit of that space aft can be used for ammunition handling, etc. and a little bit of that space forward can be used for the new FC installation and other C&C needs. Superstructure shrinks a bit. At any rate, the old ship, at 550 feet long with only 3 main gun mounts, has a lot of free deck space.

Dammit. I thought I'd fixed that.

Yes, that's included in the new armament weights.

I've revised the posting above, having fixed the main belt length, etc.

I've split the topic where P3D proposed updating the refit rules, and put that thread in General Naval Discussion here: http://www.navalism.org/index.php?topic=3784.0

Finally... some art to go with this redesign:

(click all these for the full-sized image)

And a waterline to waterline comparison with the pre-reconstruction configuration:

P3D

Have you tried giving the gun barrels some taper? They should be thinner at the muzzle.

You have pretty limited firing arcs, like +45 to -15 degrees to the sides, and blast would interfere with operating those AA guns.

I've been messing around various effects to try to get a little bit of taper on the big guns, but nothing I like the look of yet. I'm getting close on a future gun though. In this case, it was just a matter of cutting and pasting previous work.

Here's a rendering with the arcs superimposed. Q turret's fire might interfere with the 2-pounder mounts from time to time, but otherwise I think they're ok. A and X have 300 degree arcs of fire. P and Q have 240 degree free arcs (ie, the wooded sectors are all 60 degrees). 30 degree blind arcs have been what I've been using as standard across all my Confederate capital ships.

The Davis class reconstructions having proven generally successful, the Confederate Navy has turned it's eyes toward refitting the rest of it's 1st and 2nd class cruisers. The Mosby 1st class cruisers proved uneconomic to refit and have been put on the disposal list, but the Buchanan and Mobile classes of 2nd class cruisers will all be taken in hand in 1917, with the Rattlesnake class following as soon as 1918.

The first design to be completed is the Buchanan class refurbishment. The main armament of 7.5"L35 guns and their mounts are removed, and replaced with new 7.5"L45 twin mounts, which were designed from the outset to use the same barbette dimensions. In addition, the old secondary armament of 4.85" guns is removed, and replaced by another pair of 7.5"L45's in single mounts on the beams, and 6 3.5" guns, who's main role is seen as dispatching smaller prey in the trade warfare role. In addition, the former submerged torpedo tubes are replaced by 6 of the latest 21" torpedoes in above waterline triple mounts.

To speed the drawing of plans, the forward superstructure of the Chattanooga class 3rd class cruisers was used as the basis of the forward superstructure for the reburbished ships.

Centralized fire control is included. The machinery plant is converted to 100% oil firing, but otherwise left as it was. As such, the top speed is only adequate for secondary roles, and it is considered unlikely that these ships would ever serve with the main fleet. Still, for roles such as trade protection and commerce raiding, long range strategic scouting, and convoy escort, and for showing the flag from time to time, it is expected that these ships will continue to more than adequate.

As usual, a very nice Guinness drawing.

I like the global look of the cruiser with 4 funnels.

Just a remark, I think that T2x191 are too slim.
