I had a hard time finding measurments for anything similar in OTL. The closest I could find was the twin 8" mount on Salt Lake City. The turrets on this ship use the same lngth and working circle, etc. The guns themselves ar identical to Hawkins 7.5".

I'll admit that they may be a little cramped though.

Salt Lack City turrets are slim too.

Here's a modified one above the original:


Basically I just widened the base of the turret by a foot, while leaving the top as is, giving it a bit more slope.

The stats of the turret are:

Turret height above top of barbette at back: 8 feet
Turret height above top of barbette at breech: 6 feet
Turret height at top of face: 5 feet
Turret width at base: 15 feet
Turret width at aft end: 13 feet
Working circle: 20.5 feet
Space behind breeches: 10.5 feet
Barbette outside diameter: 16.5 feet
Barbette inside diameter: 16 feet

Well, I just went ahead and expanded the barbettes and the turrets themselves a little bit:

Barbette outer diameter is now 20.5 feet, inner diameter 19.5 or 20 feet.

I added a foot to the working circle, making it 21.5 feet. The width at the base of the turret is now 16.5 feet. I think it looks better.

Thanks. Carthaginian, of course, deserves credit for the original SS and his illustration, which provided ample inspiration.

Mobile's refit illustration is already in the works.

Refurbishments for the Mobile class are also planned to start in 1917.

This refit is very similar to that planned for the Buchanans. The Chattanooga class forward superstructure again forms the basis for the remodeled superstructure. Like the Buchanans, the original obsolete 7.5"L35 main guns and their mounts are replaced by the newer 7.5"L45 twin mounts. The original 4" secondary battery is removed, and the wettest and/or most blast vulnerable casemates sealed up. A new secondary battery of 8 3.5" guns is shipped in some of the old 4" casemates instead. Unfortuantely, because of the main armament layout, deck mounted guns were not possible in these ships.

Additionally, fire control and new wireless sets are shipped, and the bow bulwark added originally after trials is shored up.

One thing about the Buchanans, B turret might have to be 'parked' with its gun barrels elevated, the extra length of the 45s vs the 35s might not allow for clearance with the back of A turret at 0 elevation.
