Guinness

Two new ship classes in the CSA 2 Half of 1912 building program.

Bolstered by news of conflict in the Balkans, the administration was able to get a new battleship authorized, to be named CSS Alabama, and planned for construction at New Orleans. She is an evolutionary design based on the preceding Oklahoma class, but substituting 3 triple 13.5 inch turrets for Oklahoma's 4 twins. On marginally larger displacement, she also has a revised secondary armament (2.25" guns are no longer considered heavy enough to repel modern torpedo craft), and slightly modified protection.

Currently only one ship of this design is planned, as it is hoped that new technologies and a new design will be ready in 1913, but a sister has not been ruled out.

Guinness

The second design is a minesweeper based on the successful S-01 sloop design, with a hull built to merchant standards. She carries a pair of new diesel engines and twin screws, as well as a 3.5" gun and minesweeping gear. 10 are planned as part of the 2H/1912 building program.

Sorry mate, 6:1 is the minimum. She looks way to square anyway. Shouldn't add a whole lot of weight if you lengthen her some. Should make the bow taper more too. Nice armament layout though.

No there is no rule against having fat ships (so no limit to L:B). Some would want one, but that is another issue.

I would recommend increasing the thickness of that bulkhead, as one only 25mm thick is likely to fail under the strain and splinters created by an underwater explosion, and only give a fraction of the indicted increase in resistance.  Think I raised this in one of the threads on carthagians BBs.
Would say that 35-50mm is the ideal thickness of a bulkhead.

I was really trying to reuse the same hull dimensions Carthaginian used for his last BB: 500.00 ft / 500.00 ft x 90.00 ft x 24.50 ft. And yes, Oklahoma is a portly beast. She also has no TDS at all, so a 1" torpedo bulkhead is still an improvement.

But she looks square to me too, so I'm trying to stretch her out a little right now. Watch this space, as they say.

Revised: I added 30 feet to the length, and trimmed the beam by 3 feet. With that and better hull lines, she looks much better in plan. I managed to only add 100 tons of displacement too, and 1/4 an inch to the torpedo bulkhead, which isn't much, but everything helps.

She's still tubby, but at least she doesn't look like an oil tanker from above anymore. :) Her L/B ratio is pretty much exactly that of the Arkansas class of battleships in real life.

We'll promise to only fire 8 gun broadsides, giving one gun off each salvo if it'll make you happy  ;)

Thanks for the compliments (that goes for everyone). For me, the illustrations make it a lot more fun. I could SS all day long and enjoy it some, but actually having to turn around and draw it makes the design feel a lot more real.

Next design, I may even do a protection and machinery arrangement for it. That is if I can stay out of trouble with my wife...

Looks like a good design in general.  You could trim her so the steadiness is just 70%, and your stability would inch up a bit.

The pic is well done; I find that the drawings in general are important in confirming that what you want to do in SS is actually possible in the real world.

I see Rocky beat me too it, but trimming it back will also lower your recoil effect, which at 0.90 is a little high. Any list and she may not be able to fire abeam.

I'd fiddle with the design, as to get Stability 1,10. I'd sacrifice Seakeeping for that.
I prefer a flaoting, wet ship, to a dry ships which went under.
