Unfortunately, no monster battleships or lightning-fast battle cruisers here.
Nope, the Confederacy is building something totally uninteresting through 1912 and 1913... another 3rd class cruiser.

The Charlotte class cruiser is an evolution of the 12-strong Murfreesboro class of 3rd class cruiser. The main difference is a switch in the main armament scheme from the old design trend of a few heavy closers supplemented by a larger number of quick-firing, lighter guns to a uniform main battery of 75-pounders with centralized firecontrol. Also, the Charlotte dispenses with the tri-screw arrangement of the Murfreesboro class as it was found to be no more advantageous than a twin-screw.

BOORING... ;D J/K!

Not a bad ship, very similar in design to the NS Ospreys.

The design reminds me allot of the cruisers Gran Colombia have built over the last few years.
Her minelaying capacity is a bit limited (read:non-existent), is that not considred a huge drawback?

Boring can be good.  Ships like these are pretty important.  Are they replacing the St. Louis class, or supplementing them?

Carthaginian

The St. Louis will be forced to soldier on for a bit, unfortunately.
Now that all 12 of my Murfreesboro class are coming online, I'm mothballing the older Miami class. These ships will begin replacing those and the Little Rock class that I retired/scrapped earlier. There should be another 8-12 of these.

The Rock Doctor

Gotcha.  It'll be a good, capable cruiser force when you're done - even now CSA's got perhaps the largest force of modern lightish cruisers around.

Carthaginian

Yeah, since I got rid of the Little Rock and her sisters, my cruiser force is looking up. Between these ships, the Murfreesboros and the Hatchitigbees, I should have a rather respectable cruiser fleet before it's over.

The biggest problem with my cruisers before was a distinct lack of speed and very poor armor. These new ships should correct that.

The CSA doesn't like mines due to the currents of the Gulf having a nasty habit of sweeping them right back along our coasts. I have a few dedicated minelayers in the works, though, so I don't think that it'll be too much of a problem. The CSA doesn't think it will be undertaking any offensive mining operations anytime soon... thus the need for fast minelayers is moot.

And the actual inspiration are the British cruisers of OTL in the same period. I just do away with the wing guns that still seemed so popular.

Great beam ratio  :o

If you reduce Beam Ratio, seaboat quality 'll be certainly better than 1.1R

LOL... hey, some Japanese CRUISERS had similar L:B ratios. ;)

I know that will lead to a 'weaker than normal' hull, but the ship is steady as a rock and has decent seakeeping characteristics, so I would think that it can handle most weather.

If a pro like you has any good advice on how I can improve my ships- fire away!

Ahoj!
I love the Charlotte ...

Would you re-sim her with five deck level six inchers firing 100lb shells?
