I've been playing w/ the idea of a new BB that's main goal is to absorb punishment. While many other designs came about that could take more, they all weighed to much. This one comes in at 18k even, and is IMO quite sturdy. She's based on an idea given to me by Borys in an answer to a post on WPDB. Whatcha think?

For its size, it's decent, but I don't think of it as being able to absorb tremendous amounts of punishment; the armor scheme is quite average, I think.

Excellent picture.

If you do not want her larger the 18kton, i know both Austria and the Kingdom have BBs with eight guns of around 35cm on that size of ships that might serve as insperation.

Sachmle,

you might go looking for something like this ship (post #68):

http://www.navalism.org/index.php?topic=1178.68

Your design is too long and beamy for 21500t. Block coefficient is 0.525, while it could be closer to 0.6 for a 20kts ship - saving one or two thousand tons.

The drawing is good, but the four smokestacks suggest a nice 25kts battlecruiser, not a 20kts battleship. Only one group of boilers (and stacks) should be necessary.

While you are probably right about the BC being to low, she looks right.

She's a little heavier yet, but the BC is .604. And I like the 4 stack look. I can take the one out of each section and make the other larger I suppose, but I like the way it looks. Makes her kinda resemble Isla on profile. Harder to tell which one it is on the horizon.

P.S. - the little red bumps on the superstructure are the deck boats, on their tops, hull up.

I'd tried to squeeze the ship into 550 feet, not decreasing draught to 25', but that's my personal preference.

Better. I still think you could shave off a thousand tons with deeper draught and narrower beam.

I'd increase firing angle a bit for the amidship guns. If you remove two funnels(:P), you could increase it to +-15* fore and aft across the beam. Still, this turret arrangement can bear at least 4 guns in any direction, and at least 6 in a 180 degree arc.

If I cut the beam any I'll have to move the amidships turrets in more, so their is still room for the TDS. If I move them in I'll lose the ability of the midships turrets to fire fore and aft, because the superstructure will be in their line-of-fire.

Is the turrets no far to thin? Acording to the top view, the barbarettes are only a bit over 7m wide.

You could be weird and stack the turrets (like the old American pre-dreadnought Virginia), just instead of twin 8 inch over twin 12 or 13 inch guns, stack a single 13.5 inch over the twin 13.5 inch guns.  It would be very awkward, but interesting looking.
