Maori 'Diplomatic' Views

The Maori may be assumed to have civil diplomatic relations with anyone that they aren't explicitly noting as not talking to, even if the relationship is otherwise... cool.

Some countries - those I can remember off the top of my head - whose interactions are outside of that neutral norm are noted below.

Deutsche Kaiserreich Brandenburg - Given the Maori habit of defining any ethnically and culturally Polynesian person as qualifying as a de-facto citizen of their own nation, the considerable proportion of such persons systematically denied economic, political, and social opportunity within the population of the DKB's supposed 'homeland', and that same landmass's status as the fabled homeland of the Maori-proper, the only thing restraining open total war is the inability of the Maori fleet to force and support an amphibious invasion in the face of the more powerful German navy.

Republic of New Switzerland - The ramshackle excuse for a state is a belligerent and troublesome nest of vipers, a menace to its own citizens and all of their neighbors. While it treats is nearly ten million Polynesians better than the German Empire does, that's not saying much, and the increased crime rates and abuse of power by various competing internal interests make it a dangerous place to live. This internal weakness, and the Swiss's poor relations with the rest of the world, make the Republic a better, if less satisfying, starting point on the road to a unified Polynesian state. War is inevitable, but not yet here.

Glorious France - Distant, massive, tottering, and helplessly corrupt. Too soggy-headed to even be bribed effectively. Ultimately, acquiring France's few Polynesian possessions will require an object lesson in power projection and the consequences of distance, but the scale of the French powerbase will need to relegate that effort until after the lost homelands have been reclaimed. Fortunately, the French are distant and unobtrusive overlords, and the inhabitants of French Polynesia under no hardship. Government services the French are too incompetent to manage can easily be provided under-the-table, and are.

Italia - A modern, dynamic state with ambitions in a difficult section of the world. Italian patronage was the key 'in' with the state Maoria considers its most powerful ally, and Italian experts, schools, and technology have been of great benefit to the military readiness of the modern Maori military. Out of gratitude for this, and because their African holdings border on the DKB's interests in that region, the Italians are a valuable relationship to be cultivated and assisted wherever practicable.

Confederate States of America - A major power in their own right, allied to the Italians, and, in the past, nearly as helpful to the Maori. Most of those technological imports that were not Italian in origin have come from the CSA, and unlike the Italians, the Confederates have Pacific coastline, giving them relatively easy access to the Swiss, whom they hold no fondness for. Again, in the interests of cultivating this relationship, the CSA can expect any reasonable aid for the asking.

Gran Colombia - The Maori relationship with the Colombians isn't as close as with the above two. While there's no objection to the idea of closer relations with Cartagena, extensive measures to closen the relationship have been held off on out of concern regarding the Colombian relationship and rivalry with the CSA. An outright war between the two is regarded as unlikely, and such influence as the Maori have on both sides will be exerted to prevent it, but if so, or in the event of lesser rivalry, the Maori have already picked their side.
