Protected Cruisers are named after mountains...of Middle Earth.

With the introduction of the 4.5 inch cannon, the new protected cruisers were probably much better than the previous classes.

Gundabad - laid down 1891 (scrapped 1916)
Celebdil - laid down 1891 (scrapped 1917)

With the rising size of battleships and armored cruisers, the lighter vessels suffered in numbers of ships built. This class of lightly protected cruisers was built for speed and firepower over armor.

To replace the large numbers of protected cruisers that have been lost or will come of age in the near future, Harlond Shipwrights have come up with a new protected cruiser design to compete with the Mithlond Yard's belted cruiser design. While not nearly has powerful or quite as fast, it is considerably cheaper than the relatively untested Sharkhorn-class. Also the steam engine design for the Sharkhorn was not quite ready by the end of 1902.
