The idea here is to create a tender on the cheap, so two of the Iberian BB's do for refitt in 1910 are instead rebuilt into tenders.  The guns and armor (except deck) are all removed, engines replaced, machine shops added and Iberia has two tenders.

4.77 BP and $2.34 per ship rebuilt.

Bunker at max displacement = 6,968 tons (100% coal)

Complement:
   632 - 822

Cost:
   £0.468 million / $1.872 million

Distribution of weights at normal displacement:
   Armament: 0 tons, 0.0 %
   Armour: 376 tons, 2.7 %
      - Belts: 0 tons, 0.0 %
      - Torpedo bulkhead: 0 tons, 0.0 %

   Miscellaneous weights: 5,000 tons, 36.5 %

Overall survivability and seakeeping ability:
Survivability (Non-critical penetrating hits needed to sink ship):
     21,630 lbs / 9,811 Kg = 32.3 x 6 " / 152 mm shells or 3.6 torpedoes
Stability (Unstable if below 1.00): 1.22
   Metacentric height 6.3 ft / 1.9 m
   Roll period: 15.3 seconds
   Steadiness   - As gun platform (Average = 50 %): 74 %
         - Recoil effect (Restricted arc if above 1.00): 0.00
   Seaboat quality  (Average = 1.00): 1.49

Hull form characteristics:
   Hull has a flush deck
   Block coefficient: 0.600
   Length to Beam Ratio: 4.18 : 1
'Natural speed' for length: 19.59 kts
Power going to wave formation at top speed: 52 %
   Trim (Max stability = 0, Max steadiness = 100): 50
Bow angle (Positive = bow angles forward): -10.00 degrees
   Stern overhang: 0.33 ft / 0.10 m
Freeboard (% = measuring location as a percentage of overall length):
      - Stem:      20.11 ft / 6.13 m
      - Forecastle (14 %):   15.09 ft / 4.60 m
      - Mid (56 %):      15.09 ft / 4.60 m
      - Quarterdeck (15 %):   15.09 ft / 4.60 m
      - Stern:      15.09 ft / 4.60 m
      - Average freeboard:   15.37 ft / 4.69 m
Ship tends to be wet forward

Ship space, strength and comments:
   Space   - Hull below water (magazines/engines, low = better): 63.3 %
      - Above water (accommodation/working, high = better): 117.3 %
Waterplane Area: 25,790 Square feet or 2,396 Square metres
   Displacement factor (Displacement / loading): 188 %
Structure weight / hull surface area: 98 lbs/sq ft or 477 Kg/sq metre
   Hull strength (Relative):
      - Cross-sectional: 0.94
      - Longitudinal: 1.85
      - Overall: 1.00
Hull space for machinery, storage, compartmentation is excellent
Room for accommodation and workspaces is adequate
Ship has slow, easy roll, a good, steady gun platform
Good seaboat, rides out heavy weather easily

Nice idea. The USN had a PDN rebuild as a crane ship.

Not a bad idea at all.  Can you do more with a custom-built hull on 6.2 BP (the 50% plus scrap value), though?  Considering that there is a the commercial-grade steel option?

Her name was Kearsarge *spits as he says it*.
She has the unique distinction of being the only battleship in USN history which wasn't named after a State. She was, instead, named after the sloop-of-war Kearsarge which dueled and sank the C.S.S. Alabama. So feared and reviled were Simmes and his Black Ship that Congress drafted a special order naming Battleship #5 in honor of this accomplishment.

Kearsarge as commissioned:

Kearsarge as a crane ship:

Ironically, Kearsarge would be forced to atone for her namesale's sin- in 1941, under the name Crane Ship #1 she worked on a South Dakota class battleship.
Look at her stern and notice her name. ;)

I have been thinking about that and its a flaw I think in the system.  If I build a new hull of same exact size but build to commercial standard it would cost 2.385 BP.  I agree that the new engines should cost me but other than that this is basicly a gutting job.

Nice one. ;D
Can't see the pictures, but it's fairly easy to locate them on that site.

I know these pictures of the "k" word ship. That's what I had in mind.
Why is working on South Dakota atonement? Is it because of the "South" in the name?

LOL... the ship that she's working on in the pic, Borys, is named Alabama.

OK - I misread "South Dakota class BB" as "USN South Dakota BB".
Everything fits now :)
