The CSA is currently debating on the continued existence of the 'three types' of cruisers.
In all likelihood, the 7.5" gun will be suspended for a time- it is too light for killing large cruisers, and too heavy to fit on a small cruiser. The 9.2" gun will be retained and developed to an obscene degree, however. Triples for that one will probably be coming soon.

QuoteIt will be interesting to see what the revamped Triunfante-class class looks like when this particular little European donnybrook runs it's course.

You'll find out when we eventually reach Q1/09.

QuoteWhat will the specifications look like when El Jefe commands his designers to create a 16-gun, 12" battleship design?

Replace the front half of a Triunfante with another back half of Triunfante and you might have it.

I did - briefly - tinker with a 6x3 12" follow-up, but Springstyle went into hysterical laughter at the thought.

Well, that's the nice thing about SpringSharp... it's easier to medicate into a stupor. ;)

Ahoj!
The SMS Siligia will be built with 12/40 guns firing 850 lbs APC shells.
However, an upgunning of the ship, and use of heavier shells is expected.
Thus the barbettes and magazines are designed with planned 1000 lbs shells in mind.
Also, the expected shell and charge sizes are already accommodated by the hoist arrangements.

NOTE:
Problems in obtaining manufacturing license for the 10,8" guns and lack of domestic capacity to manufacture 12" or 13,5" guns (the ersatz Tegetthoff ships are sucking up all available steel) lead to last minute deign changes.
So, actually, 90 shells of 850 lbs (APC) will be carried. Also, the gun will be an older 12"/L40 model. Due to difference in weights this drives up hull strenght to 1,04. This will be compensated by additional balast.

That makes sure that the ship would become an obsolescent second-rate dreadnought even before laying down. Why not just design a 12"/50 gun, or buy designs from, an ally - say, the DKB?
You should write an article about some firms lobbying/bribing naval officers to build this contraption...

QuoteWhy not just design a 12"/50 gun, or buy designs from, an ally - say, the DKB?
That might have something to do with the fact that the tech level required for a 12"/50 cal gun was orignally 1910 cutting edge (which was later changed to 1907).

P3D

Yes, but the 12"/45 should be available at every street corner arms dealer (according to rumors, M'sieur Kranitz might be able to provide), while the 12"/40 was relegated to secondary roles like coastal defence in some navies.

Borys

Ahoj!
Exactly. I'd have liked a 12"/50, but none is available. It is either develop a 12"/45, or use the true and trusted 12"/40.
Is there such a gap between the two?
But if you think there is an issue, and the 12"/45 is so much better, I can develop it. And I can even use the OTL Skoda gun here.
So the commentary is now moot - the SMS Siligia will have 12"/45 guns firing 1000 lbs APC shells.

The penetration performance difference is something like 10%.
