Another one, this one with mixed turbine/reciprocating machinery, and also experimental boilers. It is rather a deepwater minelayer-cruiser, not at all directed against nearby unfriendly powers...
The reason it grew so large was my requirement not to have cramped machinery spaces. This also resulted in the installation of two small turbines. Unless someone is willing to sell me some modern reciprocating engines *looking around*. And I used excess displacement for arming the ship.

I redesigned my old frigates to conform the new rules. The old version would be almost as fast as my corvettes, so I simmed it with 1905 engines instead of 1909 ones. Thus I needed another 700t and decreasing the speed from 26 to 24 knots.

I suppose that would classify as a Second Class Cruiser in other naviesm or perhaps a belted cruiser to Rohan.

Orange has 10 old frigates (protected cruisers) requiring immediate refit due to being commissioned 1894-96. 5 each of the following classes:
3800t, 19kts, 7000@12, 2x8" 8x5"
5700t, 20kts, 12000@10, 2x8" 12x5"

Should I refit them, or don't bother? The bigger ones are too expensive to maintain for their small combat capability (for their size). Besides them I have 4 old frigate (refitted but replacement needed in 2 years), 5 new ones and 2 additional being built.
Fitting new engines just does not worth it (reciprocating engines with 1500-2000t weight, new one would cost 1BP and $2 for the same speed). I could use one or two as minelayers with new engines, but then I don't really need to lay down so many mines.

Outfit (reclassify) them as patrol craft and keep them for local patrols or patrolong your islands.

The large ones would make fine scrap iron, and the smaller ones can be decent guard ships for your fleet bases... primarily as depot/support ships for TB squadrons.

Actually, I plan to donate one of the smaller ships to Oman, for the price of the refit. The rest will soldier on.
The big ones...No refit. They were long-range commerce raiders. Placing them into reserve would be a gesture towards the DKB. Place one each on Keeling, Tortugas and Christmas island. Convert some bunkers into storage/accomodation until permanent ports are built. 2 of them will be scrapped.
Should I leave the 8" and 5" guns on or use them on shore defence?

They should be decent guns still.  Perhaps land the 8 inch and replace them with a lighter gun more fitting their new duties.  If you feel it is worth it, land some of the 5 inch for more quick fire guns to deal with local pirates and the like.

I am planning to build some sloops to patrol te extensive and mostly unpopulated African coastline, freeing up navy ships for fleet operations.
Planned class size is relatively large, 12-18.

Armament is to take on any destroyer or auxiliary cruiser, with two torpedoes that are fitted only wartime. Large misc. weight is for two large motor launch, minelaying/sweeping equipment. Speed to catch passenger ships and old cruisers. Armor is against destroyer weapons.
A smaller, 1000t version have less rounds, only one launch and is slower (18kts). Right now undecided of the options.
